Jaime L. Hunter, M.S. Ed. Is an ESL teacher with 10 years of experience working with students ranging from preschool to adult, from the university level to the Montessori school system, and from preliterate students to advanced level learners. She received her master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language and Educational Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania and holds two bachelor degrees in English and Spanish from Temple University. Formally the Director of Operations at the Barrio Planta Project in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, Jaime currently instructs at the Politechnic University in Rivas, Nicaragua, as well as with the Biblioteca Movil and the Casa de la Mujer in San Juan del Sur. She is fluent in Spanish and English.

Carrie Valladares, Board President, is a Senior Attorney at Microsoft Corporation, where she practices intellectual property and contract law. She is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, and the former President of Northwest Immigrant Rights Foundation. She has lived, worked and studied in France, UK, Israel and El Salvador, and is fluent in French, Spanish and English. Director of Operations
Sara is originally from New Jersey (USA) and now considers Philadelphia, Pennsylvania her home base in the United States. She majored in French and Music at Rutgers University, and received her Masters in Social Work at University of Pennsylvania.
She first traveled to Nicaragua in 2017 on a yoga retreat, to celebrate her first year teaching as a yoga instructor. She fell in love with the culture and the community. Upon visiting Adelante, she was inspired by the vision of Escuela Adelante and has since worked as a volunteer, ESL teacher, and Assistant Director.
Sara is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, who has been working with children and adolescents in various settings for the past 18 years. She has experience working with children with all ranges of developmental disabilities, as well as children with extensive behavioral needs. Her experiences include working on a child study team, as a one-on-one support within multiple school settings, working in applied behavioral analysis, in a partial hospitalization program, as well as facilitating in-home therapy for children and adolescents.
Adelante’s accessible education, diversity, and inclusive model create a unique and special school environment where values of social work interplay with successful educational approaches. Adelante has allowed Sara to grow and learn within her career, while also helping her to connect with the community and share in the beautiful culture within San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua.
Director of Administration
Arlen Arelly Palacios Pomares is a native San Juanena. She is the mother of 3 children, and giving back to her community is her passion. She grew up in the local San Juan school system, and studied at the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua, UPOLI headquarters Rivas.
Her experience includes supporting administration of large scale construction and tourism projects, including Pelican Eyes Resort and the A. Jean Brugger Foundation. Over 5 years with the A. Jean Brugger Foundation she worked to provide assistance to the most marginalized members of the San Juan del Sur community, including by offering scholarship, environmental awareness, and elderly support programs. Arlen joined Escuela Adelante because she believes in the mission of empowering young people through high quality, inclusive bilingual education.
